Emily Troll is a 2017 IFMA Education Foundation scholarship recipient. She attends Kansas State University and is majoring in Dietetics. Find out what she had to say when we asked her a few questions about her foodservice scholarship and future career.
What is your major & what made you decide on it?
Growing up I always wanted to be a teacher, but not necessarily in math, science, english, etc. I want to educate the community in nutrition and help as many people as I can improve their health.
How has your scholarship enabled you to pursue a career in foodservice?
With this scholarship, I will be able to focus more on my studies and fret less about finances. This assistance will help ensure that I complete the Coordinated Program at Kansas State University and graduate with my Dietetics degree.
What was your first job in foodservice?
My first job in food service was at Kramer Dining Center, a dining center at Kansas State University, as a student worker. Throughout my college career, Kramer managers promoted me to be an Undergraduate Management Assistant.
What would you say is your "dream job" after you graduate?
My dream job would be to work with young athletes by helping them fuel their bodies with nutritional foods. I hope to assist children in developing healthy eating patterns early in life as well as promote optimal athletic performance.
What have you learned that you will apply to a career in foodservice?
I have learned so much throughout my college career that I plan on applying to my future. One of the main things I will always remember, though cliché, is "keep moving forward". I have experienced setbacks along my journey of becoming a Dietitian and I know there are many more to come. I have realized everything will work out and sometimes maybe even better than imagined.
What are some of the challenges students like you face in today's world of foodservice?
One of the challenges I am currently experiencing is how competitive applying for an internship is for Dietetics which is needed to be able to take the RD exam. The application process is intense because there are so many applicants who are all qualified. Another challenge is knowing exactly what job would be best. There are so many options in the foodservice industry. Narrowing down all the possibilities to figure out exactly what I want to do has been a stressor.
Do you have mentor? How have they helped you?
I currently work under Missy Schrader who is the Unit Director at Kramer Dining Center. I am so thankful to have her as a mentor. She is always willing to give advice, guide me in the right direction, and encourages me to meet my goals. Throughout school she has helped me become a more confident leader by trusting me as an assistant manager for her at Kramer.
What is your favorite meal?
My favorite meal is pizza. Growing up my family and I had pizza every single Saturday. It is a tradition I hope to maintain when I have a family of my own.
What companies have you worked at for internships?
I have not completed any internships at this time. I will begin the Coordinated Program through Kansas State University this Spring which includes internships at Derby Dining Center at Kansas State University and the Robert Dole VA in Wichita, Kansas.
