Beck Ince is a 2022 IFMA Education Foundation scholarship recipient. They attends Kansas State University and is studying Food Science.

Beck’s story:

I have officially worked in foodservice since I was 16, but my high school had a professional culinary program, so I consider myself starting when I was 14.

I loved the culinary program, but some of the techniques were out of my reach. I also loved science however and found that Food Science was a degree and a career I could go into.

I turned 18 right after COVID hit the nation, which is when I started as a supervisor in the kitchen of the 99-bed hospital that I had washed dishes and cooked in. That job was more of a struggle, because I was supposed to manage people who had watched me grow into an adult. I still enjoyed food management though and am glad I have been able to continue in it at Derby Dining Center. In the future, I want to teach food management, because as much as I enjoy being in the kitchen by itself, teaching is my true passion.

How the scholarship will help Beck, in their own words:

Despite working multiple jobs, I have still struggled to pay for my tuition and board. After many setbacks, both financially and health wise, I was afraid I would not be able to attend school next semester. This scholarship will allow me to attend next semester, where I can continue to work to keep going forward. I am ecstatic that I can continue my education in Food Science.

Beck’s program: Bachelor’s Degree in Food Science
